With the rapid growth of online programs and courses at
Fort Hays State University (FHSU), more and more faculty members are getting involved or will get involved in online teaching. Created by the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technologies (CTELT), this new wiki is developed as an online resource for quality course development and web-based instruction. Despite a focus on web-based instruction, some resources can also be used in classroom teaching or web-enhanced teaching. The information at this site is organized into the following four categories: - Guidelines: Five categories of guidelines currently used for all courses that will be offered through the Virtual College. Some examples and references are provided.
- Resources: Corresponding to the five categories of guidelines, five categories of resources are provided to help faculty develop online courses, including free learning objects and open education resources.
- Tools: A set of tools that can be used to create engaging learning materials or collaborative learning activities in an online environment, most of them are free and can also be used in classroom or web-enhanced teaching.
- Best Practices: Some practical tips and articles on best practices in online teaching, including general resources, instructional strategies, and communications and interactions.
Let's end this short introduction with the following well-known video about Web 2.0 created by Mike Wesch. We hope this video will inspire us as educators to re-think about the nature and advantages of Web 2.0 tools - creating, participating, collaborating, and sharing. Developing this wiki is only the first step to start an online community of learning and sharing for quality course development and online teaching. If you have a good resource that you would like to share, please join the online community or call CTELT at 785-628-4194 when you have questions regarding this site.
